Dance to Some Great Cuban Music in Miami

There are several places to dance the night away in the true Cuban Style. Many are found on South Beach. But there is no place that captures the flavor of Havana in the 50s before "you know who" ruined the country than La Covacha. It's located on the edge of Miami in huge barn of a building with a thatched roof and big ceiling fans.

La Covacha has a really big dance floor and all the best Cuban music – merengue and salsa. They also attract a diverse crowd. From teenagers to the geriatric set.

The best nights to go are Friday and Saturday when you'll hear a mix of Cuban classics and the latest Latin hits. Grab a table, order some Cuban beers and food and hit the dance floor... (more)Full Article

Miami Freedom Tower Will Open May 20

Construction crews are working around the clock to finish the Miami Freedom Tower in time for its grand opening May 20. The date is very significant to Miami Cubans because it marks the 100-year anniversary of Cuba's independence from Spain. The site is very significant to Miami Cubans because it is the place where nearly a half million Cuban immigrants were processed into the United States between 1962 and 1974.

The Freedom Tower stands today as a symbol to all Cuban Americans. With nearly $40 million of improvements, the Tower will now be accessible to everyone with a 15,000-square-foot gallery and interactive museum. The Tower will also feature an extensive library and research center, including a database of Cuban immigrants to aid researchers. In the coming months, visitors will be able to enjoy a beautiful outdoor Freedom Plaza, filled with typical Cuban plants and trees including a giant Ceiba tree at the center of the plaza.

LA's Versailles Restaurant: A Bargain in Tinseltown

This LA version of Versailles Restaurant is not as fancy as the Versailles in Miami. This is strictly an informal place, with Formica tables, and very little in the way of decorating. But we do like the prices. They are very reasonable here and the food is good, making this one of the better dining bargains in Los Angeles.

The Versailles is a small chain of Cuban restaurants. It must be one of the oldest Cuban spots in LA – the one on La Cienega and Pico looks like it has been there forever! People obviously come here for the food and NOT the atmosphere. It's very Spartan, yet the place is always hopping... (more)Full Article

Atlanta's Havana Sandwich Shop

The Havana Sandwich Shop is a true hole-in-the-wall restaurant, the kind we love to find in any city. They serve their black beans with yellow rice, but the rice is so good with green peas, tomatoes and onions, we had to overlook this small quirk.

It seemed a shame to mix the frijoles with the yellow rice, which has a delicate flavor of its own! Step up to the cafeteria-style counter and order a Cuban sandwich, nicely put together with good helping of meat, cheese, and pickles on fresh pan Cubano... (more)Full Article

Sergios Serves Great Cuban Food

This place turns out more Cuban sandwiches over the lunch hour than just about any place in Miami, so you know they must be doing something right! Looks are deceiving here. Sergio's proves that sometimes the best gifts come in the plainest packages.

Forget the fancy places with their linen tablecloths and fancy table settings. What you get here is good, down home Cuban cooking – just like your Mima used to make in Havana! They serve one of the best palomilla steak platters in town for the money...(more)Full Article
