Cubano's Silver Spring Maryland

If you are in Washington, DC and want to take a ride on the Metro, why not take a ride out to Cubano's restaurant in Silver Spring? The restaurant is located just a couple of blocks away from the Silver Spring Metro Station. Cubano's is a nice, quiet restaurant that serves good Cuban food in a nice atmosphere.

They do something nice with tostones, serving them as an appetizer -- or a complete meal -- with shredded chicken and a delicious garlic-rich sauce. It's kind of a Cuban version of nachos. The ropa vieja here is almost as good as your mima used to make. The meat is slow cooked so that it is very tender. The shredded meat is tossed with pepper, onions, and chopped tomatoes... Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre

Almost 400 years ago, two Cuban brothers and a ten-year-old slave boy were crossing the Bay of Nipe when a strong storm blew up. (They were in search of salt to preserve meat for nearby copper miners -- that's where the "el Cobre" comes from.) The three sought shelter that night on the shore. In the morning they saw a small bundle floating in the water. They rowed out to see what it was. Inside was a small statue of the Virgin Mary with an inscription: "I am the Virgin of Charity." Ever since the statue of "Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre" (and thousands of reproductions) has become the most revered religious symbol in Cuba.

You will see statutes, paintings, and murals of "Nuestra señora de la Caridad." Many times she is depicted with the small boat and the three "Juans" who discovered her.

Miami has a great shopping bargain that many people pass up. The street corner vendor! These men and women stand patiently at the street corners waiting for the light to turn red. Once everyone stops, they have an "instant store" and all of the customers are just lined up waiting to buy.

Everything is packaged to sell for a dollar or two. You might get four good-sized mangoes, a dozen oranges, six tomatoes and as many as 20 lemons or limes! We've seen many things for sale, churros (pastry), toys and crafts, newspapers of course. Don't forget flowers! Where else can you get 20 roses for just five bucks!.. (more) Full Article

Like to make paella in a traditonal Spanish-style pan? The Three Guys don't usually use this type of pan, but we have to admit, it makes a great presentation. This pan is very similar to the one Tyler Florence uses on the "Ultimate Paella."

Dear Three Guys From Miami:

I am a high school Spanish student in Ohio. I have a project on Cuban foods I am doing, and I need your help. I am going to make pasta de pollo and I need to know a few things for a 30-page term paper I need to write by Monday:

Where did this dish originate?
Who invented it?
Why is it popular?
What's up with the chicken anyway?

Sincerely,

Ohio Student in Trouble!

Jorge: We highly recommend that all high school students do their Spanish Class reports on polvorones -- a delicious Cuban cookie.

Glenn: Why is that Jorge?

Jorge: One, they are easy to make and everyone likes cookies. Two -- and this is the most important issue here -- we actually have some of the information your wonderful teacher wants about polvorones

Glenn: Judging by the volume of mail we get, your current assignment is a very common one. Unfortunately, most people don't have a clue where these dishes originated.

Raúl: If your teacher asked you where the peanut butter sandwich originated, and in what area of the country is it most popular, could you tell him?

Glenn: More importantly, if you asked your teacher where pasta de pollo comes from, do you think he could tell you?

Jorge: Very doubtful! We think he'd be pretty stumped by the peanut butter sandwich question...

Glenn: ...and probably give up the teaching profession...

Jorge: ...or join a commune!

Arroz con Salchicha de Viena

There have been many influences on Cuban cuisine and Cuban culture. These include Spanish, of course, but also African, indigenous natives, French, and Haitian. Many people forget the strong influence of Cuba's neighbor to the North, the United States.

The American influence has been evident throughout Cuba's history, with the peak in the 1950s. American culture brought to Cuba cakes, and queso americano, and pan molde (American white bread), and SPAM -- just to name a few.

Another popular import was the Vienna sausage, those little wieners in a can that you have probably eaten at parties. The Cubans took this American favorite and gave it a delicious twist with rice. You'll be surprised how good a Vienna sausage can taste! (more) Full Article

Nata cake is a very popular item at Miami bakeries. These small cake squares are stuffed with a pudding-like filling and topped with whipped cream. Some bakeries also decorate the nata cakes with sprinkles and other edible items that give the cake a little color. One of our favorites is a little toasted coconut sprinkled on top.

Nata cake is the perfect dessert for parties! Make up a tray and serve them to your guests! Everybody loves this rich Cuban dessert!.. (more) Full Article
