Chicago: Sabor a Cuba
Sabor a Cuba is a nice little two-room restaurant, one of the little hole-in-the-walls we like to find in any city. The food here is the real deal -- and the prices are down to earth. Many restaurants in this price range are full of Formica and paper placemats. Here you find a tastefully decorated dining room with dark, Spanish-style furniture and burgundy tablecloths.
Sabor a Cuba has a very complete menu with all of the Cuban favorites. They have a very good Cuban sandwich -- although you might want to ask them to hold the mustard... (more)

Some day we may be able to travel again to a free Cuba. Meanwhile, take an armchair travel trip to this great nation through the writings of Thomas Merton, Ernest Hemingway, Anais Nin, Langston Hughes, James Michener, and many others.
This book captures some of the faded romance of the island and makes the reader long for the good old days before Castro. This book gives a very good feel for island life and gives us all hope for better days to come... (more)

When the band starts playing at a Rumba on 6 event, you can't help but get up and dance!
Great Miami Hot Spot
Rumba on 6 is a weekly event dedicated to keeping alive some of the traditional forms of Cuban music including son, guajira, rumba, and Latin jazz. Local Latin music impresario, Adalberto Delgado has created this long-running party, and his tireless dedication is making it a must-see-and-experience part of the Miami scene.
Rumba on 6 features some of the best Cuban musicians in the business. Famous conguero (conga drum player) Daniel Ponce is a frequent guest along with the group Conjunto Progreso, a nine-member band that really gets the house rocking. The events attract a mixed crowd of Latins and non-Latins alike. Everyone is made to feel welcome and part of the party.
If you are in town on vacation, this is one of the best ways to experience the true Cuban culture of Miami. (If you are unfamiliar with the music, crank up the radio in your rental car to 88.9FM WDNA to hear the best Cuban, Brazilian and Caribbean music!)
On a recent hot Friday night in Miami, the Three Guys from Miami paid a visit to one of the hottest parties in town... (more)

The Wizard of the Guayabera

Ramón Puig shows Miami Guy Jorge Castillo the "hands on" approach that has made him a Miami legend.
Ramón Puig brought his famous scissors to the United States from Cuba more than 40 years ago. At 82, he's still going strong, hand cutting fabric for his famous shirts in the glass windowed "back room" of La Casa de Las Guayaberas.
For more than 40 years in the United States and several more years in Cuba, Puig has made thousands of guayaberas, the classic Cuban shirt that is as popular now as it was in Havana in the '50s. A Ramón Puig guayabera is a work of art, and the fashion conscious look for his distinct label. In fact, he custom tailors shirts to order for discriminating customers who have included Ronald Reagan, George Bush (the one without the "W"), and actor Robert Duvall.
Puig's store is located in the Opera Plaza shopping area, on the outer edge of Little Havana. Visit the store and you'll see the master in action, hand cutting fabric with the giant scissors that have become his trademark...(more)
