Cuban Beverage Classics
The Cawy Bottling Company was one of the most successful bottlers of soft drinks in Cuba. The company started in 1948, and the Cawy Lemon-Lime soda became Cuba's best selling soft drink, even outselling Coca-Cola. With four bottling plants and an efficient distribution network, Cawy was one of the most successful Cuban-owned and run companies.
Cawy re-introduced its flagship product, Cawy Lemon-Lime, a name that brought back good memories for Cuban exiles. Over the years, the company diversified by acquiring several soft drinks that were also popular in Cuba: Materva, Jupiña... (more)
Cuban Wedding Cake
The traditional Cuban wedding cake often included something extra. The baker would imbed colorful ribbons in the bottom layer of the wedding cake, so that the ends of the ribbons hung out of the finished cake. Attached to the end of one of the ribbons was a simple ring. Before the cake was cut, the bride would gather all of the unmarried girls at the wedding, and allow each to pull one of the ribbons from the cake. Tradition had it that the girl who pulled the ribbon with the ring on the end would be the next one to get married. It's kind of like a girl catching the bouquet at an American wedding. Some families also had the baker attach a tiny thimble to the end of one of the ribbons. The girl who pulled out the thimble was said to be condemned to live the life of an old maid!
Coming to Miami but don't want to spend all of your time at the beach? Get away from all of the hustle and bustle of South Beach in Coral Gables -- an oasis of beautiful tree-lined streets, historic homes, a historic hotel and three golf courses in the middle of a large metropolis. We always take visitors for a drive through Coral Gables. After the craziness of Bird Road, they are amazed at how peaceful this neighborhood is. The City of Coral Gables was created by developer George Merrick in 1925. His dream was to create a planned community with both residential and commercial areas. Believe it or not, Coral Gables actually sits on some of the highest ground in Miami. There are actually a few areas where you can almost imagine a hill! What attracts everyone to Coral Gables is the beautiful houses and the variety of architectural styles that went into their design. The Spanish style of architecture is the most common. However, Merrick also created Coral Gables Villages, which have various international themes. There is a French City Village, French Country Village, Normandy Village, Dutch South African Village, Italian Village, and so on... (more)

There's a new story going around on the Internet. A Cuban guy on a diet is driving to his local Miami health food store when he decides to pick up a hitchhiker who turns out to be Elvis. They drive down the road awhile and from out of one of the canals they see Bigfoot climb out and run cross the road. They soon drive by an empty field on Krome Avenue. A flying saucer lands in front of them and two little green men climb out and start singing "Eres Tu." It's a hoax. There's no such thing as a Cuban guy on a diet. Support Traditional Cuban Music! Red beans were always more popular in Cuba Oriente than anywhere else in Cuba -- it must be the Haitian influence! There are several Miami Cuban recipes that use red beans, Potaje de Frijoles Colorados and Congri are just two of the more popular examples. If you like ham, you will love this thick, rich soup... Flan de Queso is the Cuban version of cheesecake and in many families, it's the favorite dessert for Noche Buena. Many Flan de Queso recipes call for whole eggs and egg yolks. Over the years we have found no difference between these two methods, so our recipe uses the whole egg only. No more letting all those nice egg whites go to waste... (more) The medianoche (midnight) sandwich is the Cuban sandwich's smaller cousin. To make a medianoche, you need medianoche bread, a sweet, eggy roll that is the perfect complement to the salty tang of the ham and cheese. You can make these rolls smaller or larger depending on your preference. If we're going to make medianoche sandwiches, we sometimes make them longer... Jose Marti, the great Cuban poet and a true revolutionary, was born on January 28, 1853. In honor of this great man, we recommend that everyone read "Versos Sencillos --- Simple Verses," a collection of his poetry. If you read Spanish, you'll see all of the poems in their original format. Alongside each poem is the best English translation ever performed on these great works. (more)
