May 2005

A new documentary "La Cocina Cubana -- Secretos de mi Abuela" (The Cuban Kitchen -- Secrets from my Grandmother) premieres in Miami on May 26, 2005 at 8:00 PM on WPBT Channel 2. The show will be repeated on Saturday June 4 during the station's Pledge Drive.

The Three Guys make an appearance in the documentary as does Jorge's mom, Georgina and Raúl's mom, Amparo -- the two main abuelas in our lives who got us started with Cuban cooking. We did learn from the masters!

In conjunction with the release in Miami, the Three Guys will be helping out with the WPBT Pledge Drive on June 4.

Tune in to see us cooking Cuban food, telling jokes, maybe drinking a few beers -- well, we guess we can't do THAT on public television.

OK, tune in to see the Three Guys pretty much behaving ourselves.

WPBT will be offering our cookbook, "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban" as a premium to people who pledge a certain amount. So tune in, enjoy the show, make a pledge, AND get a copy of our book.

Watch the premier on May 26 and then see us live during the rebroadcast.

The Secret Desires of YOUR Mother

Sure candy is dandy, and flowers may be nicer, but what she really wants this Mother's Day is a great Cuban cookbook!

La Cocina Cubana -- Secretos de mi Abuela
Let's face it. For the last decade or two you've been giving your mom the same old tired presents on her special day. Sure flowers are great, but the average mom gets enough flowers each year to open a small florist shop.

And candy? Isn't that really a case of you projecting your own twisted desires for sweets on poor mom, who when it comes to candy, has by now seen and eaten just about everything there is? Been there, done that!

OK, some of you might be thinking, hey a cookbook just might be a pretty good idea. However, a lot of you are already traveling merrily down the wrong thought path. You're thinking, "gee all of the older ladies seem to like that nice Rachel Ray with her bubbly personality and girl-next-door wholesomeness."

But here's the thing. We have nothing against Rachel Ray, she's a nice lady and even the Three Guys From Miami are suckers for her bubbly personality. However, your mom already knows how to make every recipe that Rachel Ray has ever published. That's right, every single recipe!

No friends, moms across the United States have a secret desire - they want to BREAK OUT of their everyday food rut and try something different. Your mom wants to kick up her heels, let her hair down, and take a walk on the WILD side!

In short, she has a burning desire to go Latin!

We know, looking at your mother this is hard to believe, but trust us on this one.

You may have missed the tell-tale signs over the years: an obsession with "I Love Lucy" reruns, the secret stash of Julio Iglesias CDs, the subtle salsa rhythm in her step as she moves about the kitchen, the longing looks as she passes the Latin spice section at the local supermarket.

These are signs of a woman on the edge.

Your mom wants to make Cuban food and you can help.

See the difference our book can make in YOUR mother in these practically un-retouched photos!

That's right, our Cuban cookbook: "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban" is the perfect Mother's Day gift for your beloved mother.

A Tale of Two (Twin) Cities -- Tapas Bars
In just the last few years, tapas have suddenly become a hot commodity in the United States. Everybody is serving tapas these days -- even some restaurants that aren't even the least bit Latin.

The Three Guys From Miami have even included a few tapas recipes in our new, upcoming cookbook -- so we guess we're just as guilty of being trendy as everyone else these days.

Although tapas dishes have invaded the United States from Spain, where they originated, there has been something lost in the translation.

Honey, They Shrunk the Dessert Tray!

Were we supposed to eat this or just inhale it?

In Madrid, tapas plates are basically bar food. You usually get a small serving for the price of a glass of wine. When they do charge extra for the plates, you can count on spending only a Euro or two -- less than $3.

In the United States tapas have leaned decidedly upscale. At most restaurants, one tapas plate will run between $6 and $12. So although we are enjoying the spreading popularity of great Spanish food, we do think longingly of Madrid and the excellent food that can be had so cheaply. Much of the United States tapas trend is an off-shoot of Nuevo Latino cuisine. It's basically a lot of improvisation and rifting on certain themes in the kitchen. The result? You're going to find a lot of dishes that would be unheard of in Madrid!

One New Mexico chef we know typically creates three or four new tapas dishes a week at his restaurant. Another thing about tapas is that in most restaurants, the plates are sized so that two people can split a plate and still get a decent sized taste of the dish.

For dinner, two people are going to go through six to eight plates. So an evening for two is going to be pricy. With four people, you can get even more tastes, although the size of each taste is going to be smaller. You'll get half a scallop, rather than a whole one. So for large groups, six or more -- it's probably better to double up on the orders so that everyone gets a nice sample!

The Cuba Nostalgia Show

Come and Meet The Three Guys From Miami

Cuba Nostalgia is a three-day celebration of all things Cuban, held one weekend each May in Miami. It's like taking a trip back to Havana's glory days, before the bearded one began his destruction of this great and beautiful country.

Cuba Nostalgia features live Cuban music, traditional Cuban foods, performers, and vendors. To get a more authentic Cuban experience, you'd have to travel all the way back to Havana! And we wouldn't want to do that now, would we?

Last year's show included more than 40 vendors selling jewelry, photos, coins, maps, music, books, and other memorabilia. The Three Guys From Miami will appear at Cuba Nostalgia at 7:30 PM Friday and Saturday; and at 6:30 PM Sunday. Copies of "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban" will be on sale at the "Esquina del Libro" stand throughout the event.
