Papa Hemingway

Raúl: Ernest Hemingway loved Cuba and the great fishing to be had along the Cuban coast.

Jorge: One of his favorite hangouts was the Floridita in Havana. His favorite drink? The Daiquiri.

Glenn: Hemingway became convinced that he had diabetes, so he invented a Daiquiri without sugar and twice as much rum!

Raúl: It's doubtful that he used grapefruit juice instead of lime juice in his favorite drink. I think this was a later modification!

Jorge: In any case, the drink became known by various names, including the Hemingway Special or the Papa Hemingway. If you walked into the Floridita today and wanted this drink, you would ask for a "Papa Doble."

Glenn: Hemingway used to bring a thermos bottle to the Floridita so that he could enjoy one of these delicious drinks at home.

Raúl: He called it a "trago del camino." (Literally drink for the road.)

Glenn: Thus creating the popular expression, "One for the road."

This painting represents the dual culture of Cuban-Americans here symbolized by both the traditional espresso coffee pot -- for those cafe con leches -- and the ubiquous American drip coffee maker, which is found in offices, work sites, and most American homes.

Tony has sold many of these at art shows around Florida. It is especially popular with Cuban-Americans who live this dual culture. Also a great gift for Cubans married to Americans!
