Three Guys From Miami: Cuban and Spanish Food Recipes

Glenn Lindgren: OK, maybe garlic bread isn't the best way to start a romantic evening.

Jorge Castillo: However, as long as you both partake in this delicious treat, you have nothing to worry about!

Raúl Musibay: It has been said that garlic is a member of the rose family, so giving your sweetheart a head of garlic is just like giving her (or him) a dozen roses.

Glenn Lindgren: The only problem with that idea is that garlic is actually part of the lily family!

Jorge Castillo: So give her the lilies or the roses and save the garlic for this simple but delicious recipe.

Pan Frito -- Fried Cuban Garlic Bread

By Three Guys From Miami

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
Yield: 4-6 servings

Fried bread rounds that can be eaten alone or topped with meats and sauces.

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup olive oil for sautéing
3 cloves garlic, crushed with a pinch of salt
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped
1 loaf Cuban bread sliced into one-inch thick slices (You may substitute French bread)
lemon juice to taste
freshly grated Parmesan cheese (Optional)

Slice Cuban or French bread in one-inch slices. Place the rounds on a cutting board and use a heavy frying pan or bacon press to compress them slightly.

Heat the oil in a large sauté pan. Toss in the crushed garlic and cilantro (or parsley) and sauté for one minute only, stirring constantly. Add the bread and sauté over medium heat until the bread is browned on both sides.

Just before removing the toast from the pan, sprinkle the slices with a little fresh lemon juice. We're talking about a tiny sprinkle, not a shower!

Serve immediately.

Optional: For an added treat, sprinkle the hot bread rounds with a little freshly grated parmesan cheese. For El Día de los Enamorados (Valentine's Day) we like to cut our toast rounds into little heart shapes. It's not that we are overly romantic. The toast cuttings give us something to snack on in the kitchen.
