Raúl Musibay: Ernest Hemingway loved Cuba and the great fishing to be had along the Cuban coast.
Jorge Castillo: One of his favorite hangouts was the Floridita in Havana. His favorite drink? The Daiquiri.
Glenn Lindgren: Hemingway became convinced that he had diabetes, so he invented a Daiquiri without sugar and twice as much rum!
Raúl Musibay: It's doubtful that he used grapefruit juice instead of lime juice in his favorite drink. I think this was a later modification!
Jorge Castillo: In any case, the drink became known by various names, including the Hemingway Special or the Papa Hemingway. If you walked into the Floridita today and wanted this drink, you would ask for a "Papa Doble."
Glenn Lindgren: Hemingway used to bring a thermos bottle to the Floridita so that he could enjoy one of these delicious drinks at home.
Raúl Musibay: He called it a "trago del camino." (Literally drink for the road.)
Glenn Lindgren: Thus creating the popular expression, "One for the road."
The old man invented this sugarless cocktail.
